Welcome to Adams County's Habitat for Humanity Website
Our MissionAdams County Habitat for Humanity (ACHFH) mission is to build adequate and affordable housing in Adams County for lower income families.
Who are we?
We are a nonprofit organization, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We are all volunteers from the community who believe in the mission and support ACHFH by contributing our time and skills in building homes. We come from a broad spectrum of the community: from doctors, lawyers, engineers, business owners, real estate professionals, the clergy, retired and active military officers to librarians, farmers, construction workers, school teachers, and manufacturing workers. We represent the broad community of Adams County. While our construction skills may vary, we are bonded by our common goal of building homes for our fellow citizens allowing ACHFH to build over 30 homes in Adams County since our inception in 1988.
How do we operate?
As an organization, we pride ourselves in being 100% volunteers, from the Board of Directors to the construction crews; no one accepts pay for their work. This means that 94% of our income (from donations and mortgage payments) is returned to our operating fund in order to build more homes.
Our philosophy is to provide a hand up and not a hand out and in doing so, provide the opportunity to a family to own their own home. A family selected to become a partner family must work on their own home prior to taking possession. The required hours, called "sweat equity", are 500 hours for a family with two capable working adults or 250 hours for a family with one. At settlement, the partner family signs a mortgage agreement with ACHFH and the partner family assumes monthly payments for the mortgage, taxes, and insurance. ACHFH provides a no interest mortgage loan to the partner family and uses the monthly income from all mortgages to finance new construction.
How can you help?
Like most not for profit organizations, we operate with cash; cash to pay for our liability insurance, cash to buy land, and cash to buy building material. If you would like to make a cash donation, please click here - DONATION.
We are always looking for property so if you have a piece of land that you would like to donate, please contact us via mail at P.O. Box 3561 Gettysburg, Pa. 17325 or by calling 717-334-5557.
If we had unlimited funds, we still must have volunteers to help build walls and raise the roof. We cannot do our job without people appearing at the job site and pitching and getting their hands dirty. If you would like to volunteer, your time please click on VOLUNTEER.
